TESHIMA

TESHIMA is an island that was used for a long time as a dumping ground for industrial waste. Fortunately, it was rehabilitated about twenty years ago. It was replanted with flowers and trees, largely olive trees. When visiting the island after its rehabilitation, GOSHOW recorded sounds symbolizing the island: the sound of the waves, and the sounds of Matsuri (traditional Japanese festivals).

These sounds were then converted into frequencies that could be visualized using a Chladni plate (a metal plate onto which grains of sand are projected, taking on geometric shapes through resonance with the frequencies). These Chladni figures were transcribed in ink onto paper. “The voice of the inaudible elements of nature” can thus emerge through science. This series is an attempt to give form to elements that exist but cannot be depicted.
