A leading figure on Japan’s contemporary calligraphy scene, Gen Miyamura collaborates with famous brands such as Seiko and decorated the Aman hotel.
Born in 1980, Gen Miyamura graduated from Niigata University, where he specialized in calligraphy. In his thirties, he won the prestigious Mainichi Prize twice, in Japan’s largest calligraphy competition. Drawing on expertise acquired through years of study, Miyamura is an artist who combines technical mastery with a unique aesthetic sensibility. He creates dynamic calligraphic works and abstract pieces that explore the rhythm of brushstrokes and the relationship between ink and negative space.
His work follows two directions: one explores digital collages made from calligraphic lines, while the other draws inspiration from symbols and language systems to create contemporary art. His art is not limited to the traditional framework of calligraphy, but instead seeks a broader form of expression that seamlessly traverses the digital and analog worlds. By embracing a contemporary perspective, Miyamura challenges conventional boundaries and redefines what calligraphy can be in the modern era. His works adorn luxury hotels such as the Aman Tokyo. He also collaborates with prestigious brands such as SEIKO, SHISEIDO and DIPTYQUE.
